COLOMBO ENJOYED the MOST NOVEL CONCEPT
The
Hawker Street Food Festival


Hawker Street a well-known concept unique in the South Asian region is a colorful fascinating Night Street Concept. An ordinary busy street by day transformed to a Food & Entertainment Bazaar by night was successfully held from 20th to 22nd December 2002 at Green Path (Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha) from 6:30 p.m. onwards.

An entirely lit up street with a variety of food offered by Five Star Hotels & leading restaurants created delicacies to tackle the taste buds of ordinary folk and connoisseurs as well. Apart from the delicious food, there were entertainment comprising of live bands, DJ music, face painting, Christmas Carols, Palm Readers, Pony Rides etc. which kept the crowds entertained the whole night. It was an ideal and unique place for night shoppers to take in the spirit of the festivity.

Hawker Street was organized by Trans-Ent in collaboration with the Colombo Municipal Countil and aims to make Colombo more attractive to tourists and increase the night entertainment in the city. Ole Cream Soda, Development Lotteries, The foundation to making Motherland Self-suffient and Lion Brewery sponsored the event. Electronic media sponsor for the event was MBC Network.

Newly Elected His Worship the Mayor of Colombo and Hon’ble Deputy Mayor
7.00 a.m. on the 3rd June 2002.

Newly elected Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council, His Worship Prasanna Gunawardena, Deputy Mayor, Honourable M. Azad Sally and Honourable U.L. Titus Perera (Former Deputy Mayor) were Sworn-In, before, Honourable M. H. Mohamed, the Minister of Western Region Development, at 6:45 a.m. (auspices time) on the 3rd June 2002, at the Mayor’s Chamber and assumed their duties .

Subsequently, at 11.00 a.m, on the same day, the other newly elected Municipal Councillors were sworn-in before His Worship Prasanna Gunawadane, the Mayor of Colombo.

His Worship Omar Kamil the Mayor was honoured by the City & County of Honolulu, at the Mayors' Asia Pacific Environmental Summit 2001.

Launching of the Millenium Centre (April 2000)

2kcenter.jpg (19441 bytes) The Colombo Municipal Council reckons the need to equip the city population with the latest skills so that the city dwellers can make a meaningful contribution towards the economic activities of the city. In order to facilitate the computer based skills training and wider usage of such skills, the council in partnership with Institute of Computer Technology of University of Colombo, in year 2000, launched the Millennium Centre Project.


An ancient building constructed in 1897 has been restored to its original form, as much as possible in the exterior, and provided with a modern interior with air-conditioning and other comforts. A Cyber café accommodates computers with multimedia, internet and e-mail facilities. The Computer Lab for Children uses computers with printers for the purpose of imparting computer skills to primary school children. A separate similar facility by the name of Computer Lab for adults would address the training needs of the adults including even university students. The Lecture room accommodates 50 participants for seminars and such events for dissemination of knowledge. The Mini Theatre is a larger version of this with a seating capacity of 150 and advance communication equipment. The Exhibition Area, Post Office cum Business Desk and the Cafeteria provides the other supporting services required for such an institution. The business sector in the city is rich with valuable experience in the related fields and their services have been invited and provided at the centre for the benefit of the users.
