BEWARE OF YOUR PETS - RABIES IS A DEADLY KILLER DISEASE

Dogs are the main carriers and stray dogs will be seized and kept under observation at the Pound.
Anti rabies vaccination is COMPULSORY.

Obtain FREE vaccination for your pots at the clinic every Thursday (except Public holidays). Under the Dog Registration Ordinance, registration and licensing of dogs COMPULSORY. This is done to induce owners to have their dogs vaccinated and to record and monitor the health and growth of the dog population in the city.

License fees Rs. 5/= per dog & Rs. 7/50 per bitch.

Each of the 19 Municipal Markets in the city have a Market Supervisor from whom you may seek advice or report problems experienced in the market.

All markets have a STANDARD SCALE for determining correct measure. If you think the goods you purchased are underweight, please ask the Market Supervisor to check. He will take action if the weight is not correct.

COLOMBO CENTRAL FISH MARKET

The operation of the fish market is regulated by the Veterinary Department. This ensures that the fish supplied is fresh and free from artificial substances which may be detrimental to public health.

LIVESTOCK

Rearing of livestock in the city is prohibited, except by special permission of the Council. Please contact the Municipal Veterinary Surgeon if you need advice.

ABATTOIR

Under statutory by-laws, only meat inspected and certified at the Municipal Abattoir (Slaughterhouse) by the municipal surgeons, can be sold in the city. Beef, Pork and Mutton sold in the Municipal markets and stalls in the city are inspected by the veterinary surgeons before and after slaughter to prevent diseases being transmitted to people through consumption of meat.

Only licensed butchers may slaughter animals in the city and this MUST be done at the Municipal Slaughter House. Permits may be obtained to slaughter animals in private premises but only for private consumption and NOT the public. Please contact the Veterinary Head office at Maligakanda.
